Police have arrested a teen driver after one person was killed and two others were critically injured in a devastating two-car crash in Winnipeg early Sunday.

A westbound Chevrolet Cavalier slammed into a southbound Pontiac Sunfire sedan at St. Mary's Road and Bishop Grandin Boulevard at 2:55 a.m. CT, police said.

The person who was killed was in the Sunfire, which was carrying five people, police said.

Police have not released the name, age or gender of the person who died, but said two other unidentified people remain in hospital in critical condition after being taken there by ambulance.

The other two people riding in the Sunfire were treated in hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

The 17-year-old girl behind the wheel of the Cavalier is facing a number of charges and remains in custody. Police didn't specify what charges she is facing.

Speed and alcohol are being probed as possible factors leading to the crash, police say. ((Shaun McLeod/CBC))
Excessive speed and alcohol may have contributed to the collision, police said.

Bishop Grandin between St. Mary's and Dakota Street remained closed throughout Sunday morning. Police were asking motorists to avoid the area.

They're also asking anyone with information, or who may have seen the crash, to call police at 204-986-6271.
