Police car damaged after 'concerning' party puts 500 people in the street near Fanshawe

For the second time in less than a week, London Police responded to a crowded house party on Thurman Circle, a residential street near the Fanshawe College campus. 

Shortly after midnight on Monday, a 9-1-1 caller reported 100 people on the street, some throwing bottles. 

When police arrived on the street located near Cheapside Street and Fanshawe College Boulevard, partiers poured out of houses, swelling the number on the street to about 500 people. 

As police began to disperse the crowd, some began to throw bottles. One struck a police vehicle, damaging its windshield.

Four people from four different Thurman Circle addresses were issued provincial offence notices for violating the city's nuisance bylaw, which can result in a fine of up to $10,000.

The incident comes less than seven days after an attempted robbery, also during a house party on Thurman Circle. 

In that incident, police charged seven people with weapons offences and seized three firearms. 

Police say two occupants of a house were assaulted by several uninvited guests and personal items were stolen.

Students and residents who spoke to CBC News for this story estimated that about 80 per cent of Thurman Circle's one- and two-storey brick houses are student rentals. 

One resident told CBC News that partiers have in the past kicked in his garage door and scrawled graffiti on his fence. 

He asked not to be named for fear of getting targeted. 

Police warning

Const. Sandasha Bough said police are warning students to be careful about holding or attending large off-campus parties. Their warning comes as both Western University and Fanshawe begin fall classes this week. 

"They're putting not only the police officers in danger by having these large gatherings, but also members of the community," she said. "This is definitely concerning for us because school hadn't even begun yet." 

Police say no one was hurt in Monday's incident.
