City hall is lowering the speed limit on Dundas Place, the city's first flex street, to 30 km/h starting Friday, July 10.

The new speed limit will cover the flex street's full length, from Ridout to Wellington Streets.

"On Dundas, lower speed limits reinforce the goal of this street as a destination shared by pedestrians, cyclists and motorists, and it reinforces the unique design of the flexible street," said Doug MacRae, director of roads and transportation for the city.

The city says the new speed limit will also improve road safety for visitors to Dundas Place regardless of how they choose to travel.

City council approved the change earlier this year. At the same time, council also decided to lower the speed limit on other downtown streets with high levels of pedestrian and cyclist activity to 40 km/h.

The first area where speed limits will be lowered to 40 km/h will include the core area bordered by Oxford Street, Adelaide Street, Horton Street and Wharncliffe Road, with the exception of a few commuter routes such as York Street.

In addition to the lower speed limits, the downtown area will also be designated a Community Safety Zone, similar to school zones, where many set traffic fines are doubled to reinforce safe driving.
