Hold on to your hat and rethink your travel plans, it's about to get very windy.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Hamilton and the rest of southern Ontario on Sunday when a mix of strong winds and snow could create hazardous conditions.

Wind gusts between 90 and 110 km/h are expected to start Sunday afternoon and could cause damage to buildings, including roofs and windows. Power outages are also possible, the weather agency said.

Two to five centimetres of snow is also expected to fall between Sunday afternoon and Monday morning. Fresh snow will likely be whipped up by the winds creating whiteout conditions and reducing visibility to near zero at times.

Areas near Lake Ontario are more likely to be harder hit.

The strong winds are expected to last through Sunday night and gradually weaken on Monday.
