A massive winter storm hit Hamilton Sunday, with more snow and wind to come overnight. Environment Canada warns of heavy snow and blowing snow Sunday night, accumulating between 10 to 20 centimetres, and winds gusting between 40 and 70 km/h.

The agency issued a special winter storm warning, which it does when "multiple types of severe weather are expected to occur together."

Communities closer to Lake Ontario could see up to 30 cm of snow.

A high of -6 C was expected Sunday, dropping to -12 C overnight.

Also, the agency warned of windy conditions Sunday afternoon and evening, reducing visibility with blowing snow and making travel dangerous.

"Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve," Environment Canada's warning said. "Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow."

A fast-moving Alberta clipper weather system brought fresh snow earlier this week, much of which has yet to melt on Hamilton streets and sidewalks.

If you're gathering to watch the Super Bowl on Sunday afternoon and plan on drinking, Hamilton Police remind you this morning to plan for a designated driver. Police said they will be conducting R.I.D.E. checks even in the blizzard.

Public Safety Canada also recommends putting together an emergency kit with drinking water, food, medicine, a first-aid kit and a flashlight.
