A Hamilton Police Service (HPS) officer has been charged with sexual assault for an offence that occurred between February 2022 and April 2022, according to Ontario's police watchdog.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said the agency began its investigation on April 14, 2022, after police notified the SIU about the incident.

The SIU investigates incidents involving police that lead to death, serious injury or sexual assault.

Const. Jeff Turnbull faces one count of sexual assault, the SIU said.

According to police, he is a 14-year member of the HPS and has been on paid suspension since the SIU laid the charge. The SIU did not confirm when the charge was laid but reported it in a press release on June 8.

Turnbull is expected to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Hamilton on July 6.
