Woman in life-threatening condition after alleged group attack in downtown Calgary

A woman was taken to hospital in life-threatening conditions after an alleged group attack on Stephen Avenue shortly after midnight on Wednesday.

She was found unconscious and 'badly assaulted' shortly after midnight, police say

A woman was taken to hospital in life-threatening conditions after an alleged group attack in downtown Calgary shortly after midnight Wednesday.

At around 12:30 a.m., police were called to the 100 block of Eighth Avenue S.W. for reports that a woman had been found unconscious and "badly assaulted."

She was taken to hospital, where she underwent emergency surgery. She remains in hospital in serious condition.

The investigation is ongoing, but police said it is believed the woman was attacked by multiple individuals. 

They said the attack does not appear to be a random act and occurred following an altercation between two groups.

They did not identify a motive for the attack.

Police have a preliminary identification on the victim and are working to confirm her identity. Anyone with information is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
