What's open in Calgary this Easter weekend

Facilities operated by the City of Calgary will see adjusted hours this weekend for Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

Facilities across the city will see adjusted hours this weekend for Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

Grocery stores

Safeway stores in Calgary will be open from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Good Friday, with Safeway Liquor Stores in the city open from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.

On Easter Sunday, Safeway stores in Calgary will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Safeway Liquor Stores will be open from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Calgary Co-op food stores are also open regular hours through the weekend.

Calgary Transit

Calgary Transit will provide a Sunday level of service on Good Friday and Easter Sunday. The Barlow/Max Bell Station will be closed April 18-20 for four-car platform extension work. Shuttle service will be in place to connect Calgarians with their destinations. For more details on information and schedules this weekend, visit the Calgary Transit website.

Recreation

All arenas (with the exception of Village Square Leisure Centre) and athletic parks will be closed on Good Friday and Easter Sunday, except for any advanced bookings.

Village Square Leisure Centre will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Good Friday and Easter Sunday. There will be a public skate at the facility from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m both days.

The Southland Leisure Centre will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Good Friday, but will be closed on Easter Sunday.

All aquatic and fitness centres will also be closed on Good Friday.

The following aquatic centres and fitness centres are open for free swim from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Easter Sunday:

  • Acadia Aquatic and Fitness Centre
  • Foothills Aquatic Centre
  • Inglewood Aquatic Centre
  • Killarney Aquatic and Recreation Centre
  • Sir Winston Churchill Aquatic and Recreation Centre

Arts centres

The Wildflower Arts Centre will be closed from Good Friday through Monday. 

The North Mount Pleasant Arts Centre will be closed from Good Friday through Easter Sunday.

City of Calgary parks

Trails at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary are closed and will remain closed throughout 2014 due to flood damage. The Nature Centre is closed Mondays and statutory holidays, including Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

The Devonian Gardens will be open from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

Other facilities

Fort Calgary is closed on Good Friday and reopens on Saturday.

The Calgary Zoo will admit visitors from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily but will close at 6 p.m. Due to construction, the southwest gate is closed until June 15, 2015.

The Gasoline Alley Museum at Heritage Park is open every day from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the Cars of the Big and Small Screen exhibit closes end of day April 21.

Calgary residents with Friday garbage and recycling service will still have their blue and black carts picked up on Good Friday.

All City landfills are open regular hours (7:30 a.m to 5 p.m.) on Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

Collection at community recycling depots is not affected on Good Friday or Easter Sunday.

Animal service centres in the city will be closed on Good Friday and Easter Sunday but will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday.

All city administrative officers will be closed on Good Friday and Easter Sunday.
