Calgary police investigating 'targeted' shooting in city's southeast

Police responded to reports of shots fired at about 8:30 a.m. Thursday on Douglas Ridge Circle S.E. A man was found deceased.

Investigators say a burnt-out SUV found in Foothills County is linked to the killing

Residents of a quiet southeast Calgary neighbourhood were shocked to hear shots fired in what turned out to be a fatal shooting Thursday morning.

The Calgary police homicide unit is investigating what happened in the Douglasdale community after they were called to the scene around 8:30 a.m.

One man was killed, and police say they believe the shooting was "targeted," meaning it wasn't a random attack.

Jason Van Der Horst, who lives one house behind where the shooting happened, was outside having a cigarette when he heard gunfire.

"I heard about five or six shots and then directly after that I heard a woman screaming," he said. "After that I went inside and I told my family to stay inside and keep the doors closed."

Investigators were on scene gathering surveillance camera footage and talking to witnesses.

Later in the morning, Okotoks RCMP found a burnt-out SUV in Foothills County. Calgary police said the vehicle, a white 2022 Ford Expedition, is connected to the homicide.

Investigators believe the suspect, or suspects, purchased gas before the shooting and used the fuel to burn the SUV after.

Police are asking the public for dashcam footage from the Douglas Ridge S.E. area of Calgary between 7 and 9 a.m. and the 296th Avenue E. area of Foothills County between 8:45 and 9:40 a.m. on Thursday.

Investigators are also asking for tips from anyone who saw a person connected with the SUV filling up a container with gasoline.

An autopsy is scheduled for Friday at 9 a.m., police say.

Police say more information will be released as the investigation progresses.
