A retired southern Alberta teacher has been charged with sexually assaulting an elementary school child.

Harley Arthur Dickinson, 72, faces three charges including sexual assault, sexual interference and sexual exploitation.

Didsbury RCMP allege the crimes took place in 2015 when Dickinson was teaching in Mountain View County and the alleged victim was a student.

The investigation began in December after the complainant reported the alleged assault to RCMP.

Dickinson has been released on bail on conditions, which include that he not be in a place where there are children under the age of 16.

RCMP say the investigation is ongoing. Investigators are asking anyone who has information on "similar type incidents" to come forward.

The accused is described as five feet eight inches tall with a medium build and grey hair.

Dickinson will be back in court next month.
