A veterinarian will be examining about 100 dogs seized from a Lethbridge home by the Alberta SPCA.

Spokesperson Roland Lines says it began after an officer visited the home, the location of which has not been identified.

"Just from his observation he determined that the dogs needed to be removed from the home. Once we have them all removed they will be assessed by a veterinarian to determine exactly what they might need in terms of care," said Lines.

Most of the animals are small breed dogs which were running loose in the home.

The resident of the home co-operated and Lines isn't sure yet if charges will be laid.

In a Facebook post, the Lethbridge Animal Services, which helped the SPCA, says it will remain closed Saturday due to officers dealing with the situation.

"We understand that people may want to help by donating pet supplies or their time. At this time, however, shelter staff are focusing all efforts on caring for these dogs and are unable to coordinate and administer donations."
