The death of an inmate at the Drumheller Institution east of Calgary is being investigated by Correctional Service Canada (CSC).

Earl William Davenport, 56, had been serving an indeterminate sentence for first- and second-degree murder since 1987.

He was found unresponsive on Monday in his cell in the medium security unit.

Staff tried CPR and called for emergency help as soon as he was found but he could not be resuscitated, officials said.

Davenport’s next of kin have been notified.

As in all cases involving an inmate's death, Correctional Service Canada will review the circumstances. Police and the medical examiner will also review his death.

Davenport was convicted in 1987 of first and second-degree murder in the deaths of his sister-in-law and her friend.

Laura Davenport and Susan Hornbeck were stabbed to death in an attack in Hamilton in 1986.

Canadian Press reported that the bodies of the two women were found by Hamilton police early in the morning of Saturday August 23, 1986.
