Two people are dead and a third is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after a collision Monday morning in the southwest Calgary neighbourhood of Killarney.

The collision happened at the intersection of 17th Avenue S.W. and 29th Street at about 8 a.m., said EMS spokesperson Adam Loria.

Police initially said in a release that it appeared one vehicle rear-ended a second vehicle and that the driver of the first vehicle died at the scene.

However, a later release clarified that it was the two occupants of the vehicle that was struck who were fatally injured.

The driver of the vehicle that rear-ended the other vehicle remains in hospital, police said.

No cause of the collision has been determined yet.

The intersection was closed for several hours and motorists were asked to avoid the area.
