Eagle Lake area closed after grizzly spotted nearby

Eagle Lake and the surrounding area has been closed after a grizzly bear was spotted feeding on an animal carcass in the area. 

The lake is 75 kilometres west of Sundre, Alta.

The order to close the area was issued on Monday and will remain in effect until July 22. 

Alberta Fish and Wildlife Enforcement wrote in a Facebook post that if you do encounter a bear, you should:

• Not run. Stay calm, keep any children close and assess the situation.
• Look around for cubs or an animal carcass, and back away if you see either.
• Use your noisemaker.
• Prepare to use your bear spray.
• Back away, while keeping your eye on the bear without staring aggressively.
• Watch for a place to hide.
• Speak to the bear in a soft low voice.
