Man shot and killed by RCMP in Cochrane after standoff
Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has been directed to investigate
One man is dead after being shot by RCMP outside his home in Cochrane on Friday night.
Shortly after 7 p.m., RCMP say they were called to the man's residence after hearing concerns about his well-being, and that of his partner.
He was believed to have multiple firearms in the house, according to a release.
When officers arrived, the man barricaded himself in his home, according to RCMP, and a negotiator was unable to convince the man to exit.
"Alternate means" were then used to try and get the man to exit the home, but were similarly unsuccessful.
Eventually, the man did exit the home, but a "confrontation" occurred and the man was shot by an officer.
He was transported to Foothills Medical Centre in life-threatening condition, according to EMS spokesperson Adam Loria, but died as a result of his injuries.
"The RCMP will continue to investigate the actions of the man and the events leading up to the confrontation with police," reads the release.
The release said no officers were injured and "no other civilians were directly involved in confrontation."
When reached Saturday morning, RCMP Cpl. Laurel Scott said the incident lasted about six hours.
Scott would not elaborate on the relationship between the man and his partner, nor would she say whether anyone else was inside the home with the man during the standoff.
The RCMP said they would not comment further on the incident.
A spokesperson from the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team said the organization would also not provide additional comment until it had the opportunity to gather more evidence.
ASIRT has been directed to investigate an @RCMPAlberta officer-involved shooting that occurred overnight in Cochrane. Details to follow.
