A Calgary defence lawyer and his 19-year-old son were charged Thursday morning with possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine.

The father and son, both named Christian Ouellette, will be released for a combined cash sum of $6,500 on conditions that include they do not contact each other and do not return home.

The son is also charged with firing a gun, two counts of possession of a weapon and benefiting from crime.

The father, 69, was suspended from practising law by the Law Society of Alberta in January after he allegedly threatened someone with criminal proceedings and child welfare proceedings in order to gain a benefit for his client.

He also launched a lawsuit earlier this year against two local Crown prosecutors after they applied to have him removed from a case for incompetence and a mistrial was declared in spring 2014.

Both Ouellettes will return to court on July 15.
