Victim fatally shot outside Kensington Safeway identified
Police say victim was a 23-year-old man from Edmonton
Officials have identified the man fatally shot Wednesday outside the Kensington Safeway in northwest Calgary.
An autopsy found the victim was Omarr Jamal Cameron-Bramwell, 23, of Edmonton, the Calgary Police Service said in a statement Friday.
According to investigators, Cameron-Bramwell was struck when shots rang out around 9:30 p.m. in the 400 block of 10th Street N.W.
Not long after, a black SUV rolled up on firefighters in downtown Calgary, seeking help for Cameron-Bramwell, who was critically injured inside the vehicle.
The firefighters attempted life-saving measures, but Cameron-Bramwell was pronounce dead at the scene. The driver of the SUV fled before police arrived.
According to police, another victim was found at the scene of the shooting. Emergency crews brought the individual to hospital for treatment. No update was given as to their condition.
Homicide detectives are following several leads, police say. However, no arrests have been made.
At a news conference Thursday, Chief Mark Neufeld of the Calgary police referred to Cameron-Bramwell as being known to Edmonton police, as was the other victim.
According to provincial records, Cameron-Bramwell had an extensive criminal history, with convictions for aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, robbery with a firearm and unlawful use of a firearm.
When speaking to reporters, Neufeld decried the violence that's taken place in the city this week.
Hours before Wednesday night's fatal shooting, a fight on a city bus outside the Central Library downtown escalated to gunfire, leaving one person fighting for their life. Police are seeking a 28-year-old man in connection to that shooting.
While the chief said it's understandable that violence in public places would raise concern among the public, Neufeld noted that both shootings and homicides are down when compared to this time last year.
"I want to reassure Calgarians that Calgary remains a safe city," he said.
