One man is dead and another has gone to hospital following a workplace incident at a new home build in northeast Calgary early Friday.

Calgary police say it seems the men had been using paint and lacquer at a residential construction site in the 1200 block of Cornerstone Way N.E.

The workers were discovered when the homeowners called the fire department to check in on the property after they smelled the toxic fumes.

EMS said a crew arrived on scene around 12:40 a.m. and declared one man deceased and took the second worker to hospital in life-threatening condition.

Police say the incident doesn't seem suspicious, and it appears poor ventilation may have been a factor.

Occupational Health and Safety says it is investigating the workplace fatality and injury and has no further details at this time.
