Police magazine and 15 rounds of ammunition lost in south Calgary
Service apologizes for the incident and asks the public for help in recovering the handgun bullets
A magazine carrying 15 bullets for a police pistol was lost Thursday in south Calgary and officers are hoping to recover it.
Police said the magazine, carrying a full load of live ammunition, somehow fell off the belt of an officer working in District 8, which includes all communities south of Fish Creek Park.
Police believe the magazine was lost between 3:30 p.m. and 5 p.m., most likely in the communities of Midnapore, Shawnessy or Silverado.

In a release, the Calgary Police Service said the ammunition "poses minimal risk to the public" on its own, without a firearm. They also noted the magazine only fits one make of handgun.
"However, police still need to locate the items to ensure that they are secure and are never used in the commission of a crime," the release states.
Police magazines are classified as prohibited weapons because they hold five more rounds than other gun owners are allowed to have.
"The Calgary Police Service would like to sincerely apologize to Calgarians for the loss of the loaded magazine," the release goes on to say.
"Firearm safety and security is one of our top priorities and information about this incident is being released in the interests of transparency. The trust of Calgarians is something the Service does not take for granted and we recognize that incidents like this can undermine that trust."
Anyone with information about the lost magazine or the ammunition it carried is asked to contact the Calgary Police Service non-emergency line at 403-266-1234, or to contact Crime Stoppers anonymously online or at 1-800-222-8477.
