The food bank in Brooks is coping with a sudden influx of clients after the work stoppage and layoffs at the XL Foods Inc. processing plant, which has been at the centre of an E. coli food scare that has reached as faraway as Beijing.

About 2,000 workers have been laid off, many of whom are temporary foreign workers.
