Alberta Health Services (AHS) issued a boil water advisory for the southern Albertan village of Beiseker Wednesday night due to "depressurization of the water system" as the village's water reservoir undergoes repair work.

Beiseker residents and businesses are advised to bring water to a rolling boil for at least one minute before consuming. That includes:

  • drinking
  • brushing teeth
  • cleaning raw foods
  • preparing infant formula or juices
  • making ice

When washing hands, AHS advises washing with water and soap. Then, after drying your hands, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer containing more than 60 per cent alcohol.

Pets should not be given tap water to drink, and at-home water filters cannot safely treat contaminated water.

The advisory noted that water for bathing or washing clothes does not need to be boiled.

Beiseker's website says the village hopes to have the advisory lifted by Friday, but for now, it will stay in effect until further notice from AHS.

Before rescinding the advisory, AHS Environmental Public Health will receive confirmation from Beiseker that the water system has been appropriately flushed.

More information on boil water advisories and using water safely is available on the AHS website.
