Police are investigating a suspicious death, after woman was found unconscious on a street in the northwest Calgary community of Bowness, and pronounced dead shortly after.

Police said emergency crews were called to the corner of 34th Avenue and 79th Street N.W. at 6:10 a.m., after an unconcious woman was spotted lying on the road.

The woman, who was in her 30s, was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday, and police said the woman's identity will not be released until the autopsy is complete.

It's believed the matter was domestic in nature and police have taken a man into custody.

Police said it's believed the victim and the man in custody knew each other and the incident was not random, although the investigation is ongoing.
