A 31-year-old man is facing an attempted murder charge connected with what police describe as a "brazen and violent" attack of another man Saturday morning in the northwest community of Montgomery.

Officers say they were called to the 4500 block of Montgomery Avenue N.W. for reports of an assault just after 11 a.m.

Police say several witnesses reported a man was attacking another man, who appeared to be unconscious, on the street outside a home in the area.

When officers arrived, they quickly de-escalated the situation and took the 31-year-old into custody, according to a news release from Calgary Police issued Sunday.

The unconscious man was taken to hospital, where he remains in life-threatening condition, officers say.

Investigators believe the two men were involved in a physical altercation inside a nearby home before the 31-year-old dragged the alleged victim outside into the street and continued to attack him.

Police say the 31-year-old went back into the home to grab a weapon before carrying on the alleged attack.

The alleged assailant is facing one count each of attempted murder and aggravated assault.

He is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact police.
