Every week Julie Van Rosendaal has been chatting with a local band or musician about food and cooking — and asking for a few of their favourite things to eat in the city.

Here are a few delicious food picks by Calgary musician and producer Lorrie Matheson.

Shawarma at Aida’s

"Their shawarma is out of this world," says Matheson. "Best baba ghanouj, too. The fatayer and kibby and grape leaves and falafel and … just so good. And reasonably priced."

Ginger beef at Dragon Pearl

"Being an Inglewood guy, I have to give a shout out to Dragon Pearl. I love their ginger beef and the hot and sour soup." Invented in Calgary, ginger beef is a regional classic and a great way to enjoy Alberta beef.

Dragon Pearl, 1223 9th Ave. S.E., 403-233-8810

Comfort food at Diner Deluxe

"You can’t go wrong with Diner Deluxe for comfort food," says Matheson. They’re known for their retro decor and classic brunch, but also offer up classic diner comfort dishes for lunch and dinner.

Beef satay soup at Quinyh

"There’s this Vietnamese place over by Sunridge Mall called Quinyh, which makes unbelievably great beef satay soup," says Matheson.

The bowls are huge and they have deliciously crispy spring rolls. It has been located beside the Sunridge Cinemas since 2003.

Quinyh, 2555 32 St. N.E., 403-291-2099, quinyh.ca

Crossroads Farmers’ Market

"We get all our meat and veggies from the Crossroads Market and I love the chicken from Regina’s," says Matheson.

Regina’s Fine Meats has been selling free range, grain-fed chickens (as well as beef and pork) since 1984.
