RCMP say the man trapped in a vehicle that crashed through a parking garage at the University of British Columbia campus on Wednesday died at the scene.

First responders spent hours rescuing the person from inside a precariously pinned vehicle after it crashed through the second-storey of the Thunderbird Parkade.

Vancouver Fire Rescue Services spokesperson Matthew Trudeau said crews were called to the intersection of Wesbrook Mall and Thunderbird Boulevard just after 9:30 a.m. PT.

Technical and heavy rescue teams were soon called in to assist with what Trudeau called a "complex" rescue.

Firefighters responded to an accident Wednesday morning after a car crashed through the wall of a second-storey parkade at the University of British Columbia. Matt Trudeau with Vancouver Fire Rescue Services says first responders are working to remove the driver from the wreckage.

According to Trudeau, the vehicle fell nose down onto the ground after crashing through a concrete wall on the second storey of the parkade. The lone occupant was trapped inside the vehicle for hours while crews worked cautiously in heavy snowfall to free him.

At the time, officials did not release information about the injuries to the victim, only that he was eventually removed.

Fatal injuries

In a release on Thursday, RCMP said the man died at the scene and investigators are still working to determine what caused the crash.

"Tragically, the man suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene," said Staff Sgt. Kris Clark. "Fortunately, no one else was injured and the scene was made safe for first responders by fire and rescue personnel."

Trudeau said the complexity of the rescue was due to serious structural concerns, the position of the car and the location of an energized battery bank structure underneath the vehicle.
