A young girl is dead after she was hit by a vehicle while riding a skateboard in a campground in Parksville, B.C.

The four-year-old from Calgary was hit by a car after she lost control of her skateboard at the Paradise Adventure RV Resort Wednesday afternoon, police said.

"Just a freak tragedy that nobody wishes on anyone," said Oceanside RCMP Cpl. Jesse Foreman. The girl's family was on vacation in the area.

The officer said the girl was on her stomach on the skateboard, paddling on a road, when she lost control and crashed into an oncoming car.

"The vehicle that did strike the young girl was travelling extremely slow and just pulling off to park," Foreman said.

"The girl lost control of her skateboard and went right in front of the tire so it was something that was completely unavoidable."

Other campers, including an off-duty doctor, rushed to help the girl but Foreman said she died en route to the hospital.

He added the family does not blame the driver and there was nothing they could have done to prevent the accident.

There will be no charges against the driver, police said.
