Rainbow flag to fly at B.C. legislature during Sochi Games
B.C. is last province to fly the rainbow flag since Sochi Games began, says MLA
For the first time every, the rainbow flag will fly in front of the legislature in Victoria, making B.C. the last province to raise the rainbow flag since the Olympics began in Sochi, Russia on Friday.
NDP MLA Spencer Chandra Herbert says the rainbow flag, which is used a symbol of pride by the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered community, will be raised this afternoon.
Chandra Herbert, who is gay himself, says the Olympics shouldn't have been hosted in Russia because of the discrimination faced by the LGBT community, but now that it's going on, it's important to keep the pressure on the Russian government however possible.
"We will be flying the rainbow flag as a way to show solidarity with lesbian, gay, bi, and transgender Russians, and our athletes over in Sochi. It's a way of showing solidarity and that B.C. stands against hate, and for equality," he said Thursday.
On Wednesday, Vancouver reignited its Olympic Cauldron, to mark the fourth anniversary of the 2010 Winter Games.
Elsewhere in Canada, Toronto Mayor Rob Ford has tried to stop his city from flying the rainbow flag during the games.
