Man killed in police-involved shooting in Abbotsford, B.C.; oversight agency investigating
Independent Investigation Office of B.C. to determine whether use of force was justified
One man is dead after a police-involved shooting in Abbotsford, B.C., on Sunday night, which has prompted an investigation by the province's police oversight agency.
Abbotsford police officers responded around 10 p.m. PT to the 1700-block of Riverside Road for "a report of a suicidal male," according to Ron MacDonald, chief civilian officer of the Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO).
He said there was an interaction between the man and police and the man was ultimately shot by officers and died at the scene.
The Abbotsford Police Department said in a statement that one man died in the incident, although his name and other details surrounding the shooting have not been released.
No police officers were injured in the incident.
MacDonald said no more details are being released at this time as IIO investigators looks to speak with witnesses.
The IIO investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
"This was a case where police used lethal force. In order to justify that force ... we will have to try to determine whether police had reasonable grounds to believe they were facing a risk of grievous bodily harm or death," MacDonald said.
Abbotsford is a city in the Fraser Valley located about 65 kilometres east of Vancouver.
