A 16-year-old girl who was hit by a truck while jaywalking in Nanaimo last month has died from her injuries.

According to Nanaimo RCMP, the teen ran across the Island Highway at Mary Ellen Drive in the southeast crosswalk against a red light on Sept. 21.

"A driver of a pickup was not able to stop and the girl was struck," said Nanaimo RCMP Sgt. Sheryl Armstrong.

"Witnesses state she was thrown in the air approximately 60 feet landing in the northeast crosswalk."

RCMP said a friend immediately pulled her off the roadway and witnesses, including an off-duty nurse, stopped to provide first aid until paramedics arrived.

The B.C. Coroners Service has now taken over the investigation.
