Housing complex gets $22M solar-panel upgrade

The B.C. government is investing nearly $22 million in solar panels, environmental improvements and building envelope repairs at a Surrey social housing complex.

The B.C. government is investing nearly $22 million in solar panels, environmental improvements and building envelope repairs at a Surrey social housing complex.

The power-generating panels — which the province says is the largest solar panel installation in Western Canada — are part of a $21.8-million sustainability project to improve Greenbrook.

The site includes 127 townhomes where energy-efficient hot water heaters, light fixtures and showerheads have been installed.

The housing complex, located at 6968 134th St. in Surrey, was selected as a model for greenhouse gas-reduction and sustainability improvements.

The province says the use of high-efficiency heating and electrical systems will reduce the complex's greenhouse gas emissions by more than 90 per cent.

The solar panels will offset a large portion of remaining energy consumption and further reduce greenhouse gas emissions, resulting in a housing development with almost no emissions.

Greenbrook is home to about 130 adults and 250 children.
