Hit and run kills 2 pedestrians
Two people are dead after a hit and run near Granville Island in Vancouver late Saturday night.
Two pedestrians, a 31-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman, were hit from behind and thrown several metres just before midnight, according to Vancouver police. Their identities have not been released.
Vancouver police said Sunday the two were struck as they were crossing West 4th Ave., which is right at the entrance to Granville Island, a small island and shopping district located in False Creek.
The driver of the vehicle, a black Buick SUV, fled the scene, but police said he was later tracked by a police dog.
The 18-year-old man is in police custody.
Two teenage girls who were passengers in the car were taken into police headquarters for questioning.
Police said Sunday speed and alcohol could have been factors in the crash.
