Highway 99 north of Pemberton, B.C., reopens to single lane alternating traffic

Highway 99 north of Pemberton has reopened to single lane alternating traffic after an avalanche buried the roadway in snow on Tuesday.

DriveBC says the avalanche hazard in the area of the roadway that is 36 km north of Pemberton to 39 km south of Lillooet聽remains high.聽

The Ministry of Transportation聽told CBC News it was notified of the avalanche just before 6 p.m. on Tuesday.聽

In a statement Wednesday, the ministry聽said it had聽performed a聽heli-bombing operation to release聽any remaining material in a controlled manner.

The ministry said that with warmer temperatures and precipitation forecast overnight, more avalanche activity was possible.聽

The avalanche danger rating for areas at higher altitudes聽in the area聽has been set at "considerable" by Avalanche Canada.

"Drivers are asked to avoid the area and reminded to obey signage," the ministry said. "People who choose to travel should prepare for delays and ensure their vehicles are properly equipped with extra supplies, including food, water and blankets."
