2-year-old boy dies after being hit by car in Coquitlam

A toddler has died after he and his mother were hit by a car in Coquitlam, B.C., on Monday

B.C. Emergency Health Services said the pair was struck at Pinetree Way and Tantalus Court just after 6:30 p.m. PT. The intersection is across the street from an elementary school and down the road from a childcare facility.

RCMP said the mother, 36, remains in hospital in serious condition. The two-year-old boy was taken to hospital in critical condition and died Tuesday, Mounties said.

"I really would like to reiterate how important it is when you're walking on busy streets to keep young children close and to the drivers to take extra caution while driving," said Const. Deanna Law at a news conference Tuesday.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene. RCMP said neither speed nor impairment appear to be factors in the collision.

"At this early stage this appears to be a tragic event without any indication of criminal behaviour or negligence," Cpl. Michael McLaughlin wrote in a statement. "We're asking that all parents be extra-careful to hold their children's hands near busy streets, and for drivers to be extra-watchful for kids who may do something unexpected."

Anyone who saw the collision is asked contact the Coquitlam RCMP non-emergency number at 604 945 1550 and ask to speak to Traffic Investigators about file 2020-27135.

Police said the area was closed to traffic for several hours, but has since reopened.
