Police have identified the person who was found dead inside a burned out SUV in Surrey, B.C., as college student Bhavkiran Dhesi, 19.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team and Surrey RCMP found Dhesi's body just after midnight Wednesday after responding to reports of a vehicle on fire in the 18700 block of 24th Avenue.
After extinguishing the flames, police say they found injuries on her body consistent with a homicide.
Dhesi was a student at Kwantlen University.
During a news conference, Cpl. Meghan Foster said Dhesi had struggled for years with health issues and only recently recovered after receiving a kidney transplant.
"She persevered through all of that and to have this happen is overwhelming for her family," she said. "They're very upset."
Foster says the attack appears to be targeted but unrelated to gang activity, adding Dhesi was not known to police.
Investigators believe the student was killed in a different location before she was found inside the burned-out family car.
The last time she was seen was on Tuesday, around 9 p.m. when police say she left her family's home to meet with friends.
Police say investigators have been speaking with persons of interest but no arrests have yet been made.
