Three teenagers were killed early Sunday when they were struck by a vehicle as they walked along the side of a road in Sudbury, Ont.

A 26-year-old man has been arrested and will appear in Sudbury court on Monday. Alcohol might be a factor in the crash, police said.

A compact car speeding north on the highway pulled out to pass another vehicle, then appeared to go out of control and hit the three teens — a boy and two girls — from behind, witnesses said.

Two of the teens died instantly, while a third died in hospital hours later.

The vehicle continued almost two more kilometres and through an intersection before travelling a short distance through a vacant lot. It then went airborne, crashing into a house.

The owner of the house, Denise Godin, said she heard "a big bang" about 1 a.m., and saw two people in her driveway, "and there was a car right into my living room."

While the names of the three teens have not been disclosed by police, their friends have identified them as Steven Phillipe, 16, Jazmine Houle, 15, and Caitlin Jelley, also believed to be 15.

Felix Whitehead said he and Phillipe were at a friend's house, but Phillipe later left to go to the bus stop to meet his girlfriend Houle, and her friend, Jelley.

The accident closed the highway for about 12 hours while police investigated.
