Health Canada and Transport Canada are the prime source of recall information in this country. But until Dec. 15, 2010, the government could not order companies to recall products that were deemed unsafe.
That changed when Bill C-36 received royal assent.
There had been several attempts to give the government the power to order companies to recall defective products, but they all either died on the order table or failed to pass. The new legislation does not necessarily mean every recall Ottawa issues will be mandatory. But the government now has the power to act, if it decides that a product is too dangerous to remain on the market.
