Justin Morrow's early goal lifts Toronto FC past Chicago Fire
Giovinco goal drought grows to 7 games
Justin Morrow's ninth-minute goal was the difference as Toronto FC beat the Chicago Fire 1-0 on Saturday evening at BMO Field.
Morrow ran onto a lovely through ball from designated player Sebastian Giovinco. The pass perfectly split the Chicago back line and the only player Morrow had to beat was teammate Jordan Hamilton.
Morrow had the better angle to the shot and Hamilton wisely gave way, allowing the defender to score his second of the season.
The win vaults Toronto (6-6-5) ahead of two teams and back into the MLS playoff picture. Toronto is now tied with the New York Red Bulls for fourth place in the Eastern Conference with 23 points.
Toronto had ample opportunity to add to their lead in front of 27,934 fans but despite outshooting Chicago 10-1 in the first half, the lead was only 1-0 at halftime.
Chicago didn't provide much offensively but all they needed was one chance to get things level and they very nearly got it when Kennedy Igboananike cut inside and unleashed a curling right-footed effort that rattled the crossbar in the 64th minute.
Giovinco was pulling the strings all night but just couldn't score and an uncharacteristic goal drought has now extended to seven games. In the 70th minute, he had a free kick come off the post and less than 10 minutes later, had a shot go wide.
Impact stretch unbeaten streak to 5
Yura Movsisyan's penalty kick tied it in the 79th minute and Real Salt Lake held on for a 1-1 tie with the Montreal Impact on Saturday night.
The Impact's Calum Mallace tripped Plata as he was attempting a shot in the penalty area and Movsisyan converted with a hard shot from the penalty spot for his sixth goal in 10 games.
Harry Shipp scored in the eight minute on a left-footed putback. RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando knocked down Laurent Ciman's knuckling free kick and Shipp raced in to finish.
Real Salt Lake had two shots in the final minute, but Montreal goalkeeper Evan Bush preserved the draw with a diving save on Kyle Beckerman's deflected shot.
The Impact (6-4-7) improved their unbeaten streak to five games in their only 2016 regular-season meeting with RSL (8-5-5). Each team ended the night in third place in their respective conferences.
Extra time goal leaves Whitecaps with draw
Axel Sjoberg scored late in extra time as the Colorado Rapids extended their unbeaten streak to 13 games with a 2-2 draw against the Vancouver Whitecaps.
Sjoberg's goal silenced a sellout crowd of 22,120 at BC Place Stadium. Striker Kevin Doyle made a pass from the side of the net that Sjoberg headed by Whitecaps goalkeeper David Ousted.
Vancouver's Christian Techera had scored on a penalty kick in the 87th minute to give the Whitecaps a 2-1 lead.
The penalty was awarded after Techera was hauled down from behind in the penalty box by Colorado defender Jared Watts.
