Canada's Cameron claims bronze in men's sitting sprint cross-country event

Canada's Collin Cameron earned a bronze medal in the men's sitting sprint Para cross-country skiing event at the Beijing Paralympics on Wednesday in China.

Cameron, of Bracebridge, Ont., crossed the finish line in two minutes 46.3 seconds. Zheng Peng of China claimed gold with a time of 2:42.4, while fellow countryman Mao Zhongwu took silver finishing the race in 2:44.9

It is the second medal of the Games for the 33-year-old Cameron who won bronze in the men's 18-kilometre sitting cross-country event. It is also his fifth career Paralympic medal, having also won three bronze medals at Pyeongchang 2018.

"It's not what I wanted today. I came here to win this race today and was really confident," Cameron said after the event. "My competitors had incredible races. I think we all had our best race of our life.

"There's nothing more I could have done today so I'm happy with this in a way but I still wanted a little bit more today."

The Canadian is far from upset despite not striking gold.

"I'm trying to realize that, despite not accomplishing my big goal today. It's still pretty amazing for sure," he said.

Cameron will go for his third medal of the Games on Friday at 11:15 p.m. ET, in the men's sitting 10km race. But, he denies any want for revenge against the Chinese duo who finished ahead of him in both events he's competed in so far.

"Revenge for me will be in four years in this race. The next race is totally different — different mindset, different focus. [I'll] just go out and try to have a good day."

Canada's Christina Picton finished sixth in the women's sitting sprint final with a time of 3:38.6, just over 20 seconds behind gold medallist Yang Hongqiong of China.

Canada back to winning ways in wheelchair curling

Canada's wheelchair curling squad bounced back from a three-game losing streak with vital wins over Estonia and Great Britain on Wednesday.

Co-flag-bearer Ina Forrest, skip Mark Ideson, Dennis Thiessen and Jon Thurston took the lead 4-2 with three in the third end en route to a 9-3 victory over Estonia.

A two-point score by Canada in the sixth and seventh ends powered them past Great Britain 6-3 earlier on Wednesday.

"I think we just stuck to our process," said Ideson. "The losses, there were a lot of good things we were still doing. The other teams were playing well, they made a couple of shots to get themselves into some ends that we had [been] setting up. It was a great start [to the competition] — just faced a little bit of adversity with those three losses in a row.

"It was nice to have this day."

Canada (6-3) currently sits in third ahead of Slovakia (5-3), while China (6-2) and Sweden (6-2) occupy the top two spots. Only the top four teams qualify for the semifinals.

South Korea (4-4), Latvia (4-4),  the United States (4-4), Norway (4-5), Great Britain (3-5), Estonia (2-6), and Switzerland (1-7) are on the outside looking in.

Canada will wrap up the round robin stage when it plays Norway at 8:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday.

Great Britain's David Melrose took a fall trying to pick up his stick mid-game, resulting in an injury to his shoulder. He was replaced by teammate Gary Smith.

"I just want to express my concern for David, I hope he is OK. He is such a strong competitor, a big number in their team," Ideson said. "They had a strong player coming off the bench [Smith], they have a really strong program."

Canada set for rematch in Para hockey semis

Canada's men's Para ice hockey team will face South Korea again, this time in the competition's first semifinal matchup on Thursday at 10:50 p.m. ET.

James Dunn's hat trick and assist propelled Canada to its first win at the Beijing Paralympics with a 6-0 victory over the South Koreans on Monday.

After a 5-0 loss to the U.S. in their opener on Saturday, the Canadians finished second in a three-team Group A to secure an automatic spot in the semifinals.

South Korea shutout Italy 4-0 in the quarter-finals on Wednesday.

The other quarter-final of Day 5 saw China edge Czech Republic 4-3. The U.S. and China will play on Friday at 6:50 a.m. ET in the tournament's other semifinal match.
