Cam Levins established a new Canadian record in the 10,000m track and field event at the 2015 Nike Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Ore. on Friday.

He completed the race in 27:07.51 to finish in fourth place and surpass the previous record of 27:23.63 held by Simon Bairu since 2010.

Mo Farah of Great Britain was the winner of the 10,000m with a time of 26:50.97.

Levins said after the race that he had rested well prior to the event and was gunning for a fast time. His coach Alberto Salazar made sure Levins was tapering significantly before the Prefontaine Classic — bringing down his mileage — so his body was ready to go.

"He wanted to make sure I had really good showing here, and I'm pleased with what I did," Levins said.

Canadian Mo Ahmed placed 11th in the 5,000 with a time of 13:20.67. Ethiopian Yomif Kejelcha, the 2014 world junior champion, won the race in 13:10.54

Christabel Netty also set a new Canadian record in women's long jump by leaping 6.99 and 6.96 metres to top her own mark twice and finish second.
