Canadian boxer David Gauthier moved one step closer to advancing to the Rio Olympics Wednesday in Buenos Aires.

The Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que., resident defeated Jaime Munoz of Panama 2-1 in the 60-kilogram division and advanced to the semifinals of the 2016 American qualification event.

Only the top 3 boxers of each category will earn a spot for Rio, a berth Gauthier would secure with a victory in his next match scheduled for Thursday.

However, things didn't go so well for compatriot Petru Bolun in his quarter-final bout.

The Calgary boxer lost 3-0 to Mina Caicedo of Ecuador.
