Sweden dominates Russia, on to semis

Sweden has secured a spot in the semifinals at the world junior hockey championships in Ottawa.

Ottawa Senators draft pick Andre Petersson scored twice as Sweden crushed Russia 5-0 on Wednesday.

The Swedes were already up 4-0 by the end of the first frame. Simon Hjalmarsson, Mikael Backlund and Marcus also scored for Sweden.

Goalie Jacob Markstrom turned away 31 shots to earn the shutout.

Russia will face the Czech Republic in the quarter-finals. Netminder Danila Alistratov was pulled after allowing four goals on 12 shots, and was replaced by Vadim Zhelbnyuk, who stopped 25 of 26 shots.

Sweden capitalized on two power plays in the first period and finished 2-for-8 overall. Russia went 0-for-3 with the man advantage.

Petersson put the Swedes on the board at 5:01 of the first period, and Hjalmarsson added another goal five minutes later. A power play goal by Petersson put Sweden ahead 3-0 when Alistratov misplayed the puck.

A Russian power play halfway through the period resulted in no shots on net, and Backlund made it 4-0 with just over two minutes remaining in the period.

The score remained 4-0 until early in the third when Johansson beat Zhelobnyuk to the glove side.
