Maple Leafs acquire Jamal Mayers from Blues

On the eve of the NHL draft, the Toronto Maple Leafs swung a deal to acquire forward Jamal Mayers from the St. Louis Blues.

In exchange for the six-foot-one, 214-pound Toronto native, the Blues receive Toronto's third-round pick (70th overall), in the 2008 draft, which begins on Friday night and runs through Saturday.

Mayers, 33, has been a player within the Blues organization since his selection in the fourth round (89th overall) of the 1993 draft. In 80 games with St. Louis last season, he scored 12 goals and added 15 assists with 91 penalty minutes. 

Over the course of his NHL career, he's amassed 51 goals, 58 assists and 576 penalty minutes.

Mayers was also a member of Canada's silver-medal winning entry at the 2008 IIHF World hockey championship. In nine games with Team Canada, Mayers scored two goals and added three assists, with a rating of plus-six rating.

"I want to thank Jamal for everything he has done for the Blues and the city of St. Louis," said Blues president John Davidson in a statement. "We wish Jamal and his family nothing but the best in his hometown of Toronto."
