Hayley Wickenheiser will undergo season-ending surgery on her foot and won't play for Canada in the upcoming women's world hockey championship.

The four-time Olympic gold medallist and Canada's all-time leading scorer played in last year's Winter Olympics with a broken bone in her left foot.

Wickenheiser had surgery last summer but she says her foot continues to give her problems this season.

Wickenheiser plays for the University of Calgary Dinos. The 36-year-old intends to resume playing next season.

Canada's roster for the women's world championship in Sweden is expected to be unveiled in the next few weeks.
