Foligno named coach, GM of Sudbury Wolves

Former NHL player Mike Foligno is going home.

Foligno has been named the new coach and general manager of the Ontario Hockey League's Sudbury Wolves.

Foligno, who was born in Sudbury and played for the Wolves from 1975 to 1979, spent 15 seasons in the NHL. His career included stints with the Detroit Red Wings, Toronto Maple Leafs, Buffalo Sabres and Florida Panthers before retiring in 1994.

The 44-year-old Foligno takes over the Wolves from Bert Templeton, who was fired in March after a dismal 16-46-4-2 campaign.

"It's great to be home," Foligno said in a statement. "I am looking forward to this opportunity of leading the Sudbury Wolves to the top of the OHL pack once again."

Foligno had been coaching the American Hockey League's Hershey Bears, a club affiliated with the Colorado Avalanche. He spent time as an assistant with the Maple Leafs in 1995-96 and the Avalanche in 1997-98.

Foligno won the OHL scoring title while with the Wolves in 1979. He collected 65 goals and 85 assists that season.

He still holds the Wolves' franchise record for points in a season.

The Wolves recently drafted Foligno's son Nicholas in the fifth round of the OHL draft.
