Lions' Davis connected to large ecstasy bust

The West Division's top special-teams player last season is in some legal hot water.   

A CFL source requesting anonymity told The Canadian Press late Wednesday night Yonus Davis of the B.C. Lions has been detained in California by Drug Enforcement Administration authorities. He had more than 27 kilograms of ecstasy pills in his possession reportedly with the intent to distribute them.   

A Lions official would neither confirm nor deny the allegations, adding the CFL club will discuss Davis's situation in conference call Thursday afternoon.   

"We are aware of an incident that involves Yonus and we will continue to gather additional information," Lions coach and GM Wally Buono said in a statement released earlier Wednesday. "He remains part of our football club while the investigation process takes its course and we will not comment further at this time."   

Davis was the West Division finalist for the CFL's outstanding special teams player this past season, finishing second to Chad Owens of the Toronto Argonauts.   

The source said the five-foot-seven, 190-pound tailback and kick-returner was apprehended almost two weeks ago in California but that the Lions learned of Davis's situation over the weekend.   

Davis, 26, was a CFL rookie last season with B.C., making his mark on special teams. The former San Jose State star led the West Division in all-purpose yards with 1,642. He was fourth in that category in the entire CFL, with Owens topping the league with 2,701 yards.   

Davis also saw action in the Lions' backfield, rushing for 213 yards on 34 carries (6.3-yard average) with three touchdowns and seven fumbles. He also added seven catches for 42 yards and a TD.   

Davis also had 64 punt returns for 761 yards (11.9-yard average) and two TD while adding 32 kickoff returns for 800 yards (25-yard average). He also returned three missed field goal attempts for 66 yards.   

Davis played at San Jose State from 2003 to 2008, redshirting the '04 campaign. He ran for 1,007 yards on 163 carries in 2006, becoming the first Spartan since 2000 to rush more than 1,000 yards in one season.   

He became the first running back in school history to average more than six yards per carry in consecutive seasons. He was also a conference all-star in 2005 and '06.   

After being out of football in 2009, Davis signed as a free agent with the Lions on Jan. 20, 2010.
