Argonauts deal Mace to Calgary
Defensive lineman spent most of past 2 seasons on Bills' practice roster
Corey Mace has yet to play a down in the CFL but finds himself the property of a fourth team in the league.
The Toronto Argonauts have dealt the rights to the Canadian-born defensive lineman to the Calgary Stampeders for linebacker Tristan Black, both clubs confirmed on Saturday morning.
A six-foot-three, 294-pounder, Mace, a native of Port Moody, B.C., is currently an NFL free agent after spending most of the last two seasons on the practice roster of the NFL's Buffalo Bills. Now 24, he played collegiately at Wyoming and signed as a free agent with Buffalo prior to being selected in the second round, 11th overall, by Winnipeg in the 2007 CFL Canadian college draft.
The Bombers dealt Mace's rights plus an '09 first-round draft pick to Hamilton for linebacker Zeke Moreno during the '08 CFL campaign. Mace and the Tiger-Cats couldn't agree on a contract so he did not sign in Steeltown.
Hamilton then traded Mace's rights to Toronto last summer as part of the deal that sent disgruntled slotback Arland Bruce III to the Ticats.
Mace spent two seasons with Buffalo, mostly on the practice roster. He wasn't tendered a contract offer from the Bills following last season.
Black was taken by the Stampeders in the second round of the 2009 CFL draft and played five games as a rookie, recording eight defensive tackles.
A graduate of the strong football program at Central Technical School in Toronto, Black played three seasons at Wayne State where he was a team captain and named Second-Team All-Conference as a senior.
