Wells' feels no pain in Blue Jays' loss to Houston

Toronto outfielder Vernon Wells tested out his left hamstring on Saturday and felt no ill effects in the Blue Jays' 9-7 loss to Houston.

In fact, he felt so well that he was in the game longer than expected.

"He was originally scheduled to just play three innings," Toronto manager Cito Gaston said. "But he wanted another at-bat so we played him five."

Wells played outfield for the first time this spring, but didn't have a ball hit his way during the five innings of work. He went 1-for-3 at the plate, with a single to his credit.

The big hamstring test came when Wells advanced from first to third on an Adam Lind base hit, and he showed no signs of discomfort while running.

The two-time all-star went down on Feb. 23, re-injuring the hamstring that kept him out of the lineup for the last month of the 2008 season. He was Toronto's designated hitter on Friday, his first action since the injury.

Jays pitcher Roy Halladay struggled on the day, giving up six runs and nine hits over six innings. It was the longest outing he's had so far this spring. He was tagged for two home runs by Astros second baseman Edwin Maysonet.

"I'm not too worried about Doc," Gaston said. "He just got the ball up a little bit [in the sixth]. I'm sure he's not happy about it."
