Jays' Bautista wins AL's monthly honour

Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista was named the American League Player of the Month for August on Thursday.

Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista was named the American League Player of the Month for August on Thursday.

Bautista is coming off a red hot August in which he led the A.L. in home runs (12), RBIs (24), slugging percentage (.724) and total bases (72).

He also finished tied for the lead in extra-base hits (18), and was tied for second with 23 runs and was third with 23 walks.

The Jays star, who currently leads the majors with 43 homers, shared the monthly honour with Minnesota's Delmon Young in July.

Bautista is just the second Blue Jay to win two player of the month awards in a single season (John Olerud in 1993 is the other) and the first to be honoured in consecutive months.

Prior to Bautista's July win, the last Blue Jay to win the player of the month award was Joe Carter in April 1994.
