Chipper Jones injured at Baseball Classic

Chipper Jones, who has never managed to play a full 162-game schedule in any of his 14 major league seasons, is nursing another injury.

The Atlanta  Braves third baseman, who is playing for the United States at the World Baseball Classic, was injured swinging at a pitch in the fifth inning of a 15-6 victory that sent the U.S. into the tournament's second round.

"I got a good pitch to hit and tried to come out of my shoes to hit it," Jones said. "I'm a switch-hitter, it's something that's happened to me dozens of times. Hopefully, it will just be a couple days."

Jones planned to rest Monday but said he might try to swing Tuesday if the pain has diminished.

Hitless in seven at-bats with five strikeouts at the WBC, Jones will be re-evaluated on Monday.

American manager Davey Johnson said the Atlanta slugger could miss "a week or two."

"I told [New York Mets third baseman] David Wright 'This is probably the last time you're going to DH,"' Johnson said. "Any time somebody has a little strain in the spring you have to be real cautious."

Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun pinch hit for Jones in the sixth inning at Rogers Centre in Toronto.

Last season, Jones hit .364 in 128 games for Atlanta with 22 home runs and 75 runs batted in. His best campaign was 1999 when he averaged .319 with 45 homers and 110 RBI.

He has not reached 140 games played in each of the past five seasons.
