National Aboriginal Day: stories of resistance, resilience and heroes

National Aboriginal Day is just days away. June 21 marks the day to celebrate Indigenous cultures, heritage, contributions and innovations.

Besides National Aboriginal Day, this year also marks the 150th anniversary of Canada Confederation.

But while the country marks the occasion, a group of Indigenous artists and activists are inviting you to join the resistance.

#Resistance150 is a project that highlights the many ways Indigenous peoples have historically resisted, and continue to resist. Christi Belcourt and Isaac Murdoch share their ways of resistance.

Mary Grace Kosta is also joining in on the #Resistance150 by using Twitter to draw attention to 150 Indigenous heroes, both past and present.

One of those heroes is Ellen Neel. She was the first female carver and was from Alert Bay, B.C. Her grandson, David Neel, shares a fond memory of his grandmother and how he is passing the family legacy onto his own children.
